What does an IQ score mean?

An IQ score is easiest to understand as a standardized comparison. Its meaning depends on the test, the reference group, how it was administered, and the uncertainty built into any measurement.

Scores are comparisons, not labels

A standardized score indicates how performance compares with the group used to norm a test. On many comprehensive tests, 100 is the average and 15 points is often one standard deviation. But that convention does not make scores interchangeable across every test or setting.

Why percentiles can be easier to read

A percentile expresses the share of a reference group that scored at or below a result. It can make a comparison more intuitive, but it is still tied to that specific test’s norms. A percentile from a short online assessment should be understood as an estimate, not a clinical finding.

Confidence and context matter

Professional assessments report measurement uncertainty and are interpreted by qualified practitioners. A single session can be influenced by factors that have little to do with underlying ability. For that reason, no short online score should be used to diagnose a condition, determine educational placement, or make an employment decision.

A more useful question
